Day #41 - Describing career

A few posts ago I wrote about Quizlet. As I said before I use it quite often. Sometimes I prepare sets of flashcards with Polish, sometimes with English definitions.  This time I tried to prepare the whole sets of words connected with the actual issue I’m just studying using only English.

I think that it can be useful for you so I decided to publish it here. This time a collection of words about job and career. 

Day #30 - Why Memrise is not actually Quizlet rival

As you can already know Quizlet and Memrise are tools which help to memorise and revise new words. The first and the second have some advantages and disadvantages. Because of that I usually use both of them for learning the same sets of words. And so far it’s working for me. Maybe it can be a solution for you too?

I like Quizlet for its:

• Possibility of finding the definitions of the terms among those added by other users
• Added audio with the pronunciation of the words – it’s American and it’s not natural human voice and yet it’s very helpful
• Possibility of collecting sets in folders
• Possibility of exporting and importing whole lists of words

I like Memrise for its:

• More interesting and more suitable for me exercises
• Algorithm of revising
• Gamification which brings fun and motivate
• More efficient mobile app

But how to use both tools without unnecessary additional effort? 

I usually create my sets in Quizlet – because of its automatic terms adding possibility.

And then I export the set of words to Memrise.

Click More and Export

I use defoult options

Click Bulk add words

Paste words and click Add button - that's it.

Day #24 - Memorising and revising - part 2

The best thing in Quizlet is its mobile version. If you have it on your mobile phone you have all your words with you. This way you can learn or revise them anytime and anywhere.

Day #23 - Memorising and revising – part 1

In one of the last posts I told you how I use mnemonic to connect the knowledge I own with new material. But this is just the beginning. Let’s be honest. If you want to remember the word you have to repeat it, repeat it and repeat it.

Have I told you yet that I’m not a talented language learner? Therefore I have to repeat new words more than others. 

But I have some help – an excellent ICT tool - Quizlet. I’ve already written about it, but this time I want to add some more details.

First I have to prepare my flashcards set. When I putting words and phrases one after another creating set sometimes I use auto-define option. Remember - the definitions from the list were added earlier by other users so you should be careful – not every of them are correct. But they really make creating set faster.

When my set is ready I go to the Cards section and show Both Sides of cards. I think this can be very helpful for learning by heart, because you can see both the English word and the translation. Quizlet will also “say” what is on both sides of the flashcards. So you can see the word, definition and hear both.

A few senses use and the what-I-see-close-together-I-remember-better rule – this have to work. And it works!

After that I usually go to the Learn section. Here I memorise the words by typing them and practicing spelling but without any stress because I can always Give up and Copy the answer.

Using Speller section I can hear the words and try to write them down (type actually). Here I have to be very careful with spelling.

After so many different task I usually know all the words from the set.

Of course I have to return to it later to revise material. I try to do it regularly, because without regular revising I usually forgetting very quickly.

If you want make your revision more varied you can use other Quizlet tools – Tests.

Or games – Scatter – a memory-like game or another game called Race.

Quizlet is very useful tool and I use it very often, almost daily. And in addition it has its mobile version too. I’m going to write more about it in following posts. To be honest without this tool my learning would be very tough and tedious experience. 

One of my favourites tools - Quizlet

The tool I've been using for some time is Quizlet.
I really recommend it to all of those who learn new words. It's a quite helpful tool when you need all your new vocabulary lists to be always close at hand.

It is possible because you can use Quizlet in different ways and you can use with it different kind of tools.
You may learn using PC computer, tablet or your smart phone or you can even print your flashcards and use them in traditional way.
Yes, this tool helps you prepare electronic version of flashcards, it helps you to organise them and learn with them more effectively. Using Quizlet's flashcard you not only can see the word and the definition of it but also hear the pronunciation (American one) of the word or of the whole phrase. The service is very helpful because of possibility of choosing the way you want to learn. There are flashcards of course, there is a game or two, there are some tests with various kind of questions, there are also tasks which test your spelling or understanding by hearing.
Imagine, with Quizlet you have all your vocabulary you're learning just now always with you. All you need is the internet connection and your readiness to memorise or revise English words.
